Background
Sarah Palin, born February 11, 1964, in Sandpoint, Idaho. At the age of three months she moved to Wasilla, Alaska. Not only did Sarah graduate from Wasilla High School in 1982, she played basketball for the schools state championships team. After graduating she wore the crown of Miss Wasilla in 1984 and was the runner-up in the Miss Alaska contest. Sarah then went on to earn a bachelors degree in journalism from the University of Idaho in 1987. Palin eloped with high school sweetheart, Todd Palin, on August 29, 1988. They have five beautiful children together: Bristol, Willow, Piper, Track, and Trig.
Political Background
Sarah entered the political arena in 1992 running on the Republican ticket, winning a seat on the Wasilla City Council by opposing tax hikes. Four years later she was elected mayor of Wasilla, knocking off three-term incumbent John Stein. As mayor she cut property taxes and reduced spending. In 2002, she ran her first statewide campaign for Republican nomination for lieutenant governor, but lost by fewer than 2,00 votes. Alaskan Governor Frank Murkowski appointed Palin to chair the states Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in 2003, but she resigned a year later in protest over what she thought to be “lack of ethics” of fellow Alaskan Republican leaders. In 2006, Palin won the Republican primary for Governor and went on to win the general election November 2006, 49 percent to 41 percent. With this election Palin made history as the first female governor, as well as the youngest governor of Alaska. As governor she focused on education, public safety and transportation. John McCain picked Palin to be his Vice Presidential running mate on August 29, 2008; Palin became the second woman to run for Vice President on a U.S. major party ticket, and the first Republican female to do so. After they lost the presidential election Palin returned to Alaska and resumed her duties as governor. After a year she resigned as governor, and there were speculations that she would run for the 2012 Presidential campaign. July 2014 Palin created her own media enterprise, The Sarah Palin Channel.
Presidential
As we have seen Palin was picked as the 2008 Vice Presidential candidate for the Republican Party. From this we see that she has major potential to be in the White House. After stepping down she became associated with the Tea Party movement, which endorsed reduced government spending, lower taxes, and a closer adherence to the original U.S. Constitution. While also endorsing a handful of successful Tea Party candidates in the 2010 mid-term election. Palin also launched the “Pink Elephant Movement” to endorse female GOP candidates. As we have been told Palin has shown interest in the 2016 Presidential election, stating that she wants to see a female in the White House.

I was not informed at all of the "Pink Elephant Movement" so I looked it up. I think it's great how much she fights for it to be know that woman are the driving force behind this movement. She said in a press conference that "Michele is leading the stampede". How much has Michele actually talked about this movement and what all does she do in involvement with Sarah Palin?
ReplyDeleteFrom my research it seems that there has not been as much involvement from Michele since 2010 and 2011. But when she was involved it looked as if tho she really stood behind Palin to help get women in the office.
DeleteI think it's really great that Sarah Palin is encouraging female candidates and supporting fellow women within her party. She got a lot of negative press during the 2008 election, do you think that will effect her image is the 2016 campaign?
ReplyDeleteI think since the 2008 election where she did get a lot of negative press and it seemed "okay" to continue with it because no one really tried to stop it. This will come back to her in 2016 because she has been in the press since and it has been for both positive and negative but she is a public figure that is easy to meme and people will continue to do so.
DeleteAfter specifically reading the background aspect of your post and learning that she eloped early on in her life. Also keeping in mind the issues that have come about concerning her family, specifically her children, when she was in the spotlight while running with McCain. Do you think that family will be a strength or weakness for her in her potential 2016 campaign?
ReplyDeleteFamily is something that Sarah is really strong about, so even tho she had some issues she over came them and did not let those really get to her. She even had a tv show about her family. So yes, i do believe that she will try to use her family as a strength in the 2016 campaign.
DeleteI really like that she is so involved in womens rights, I defiantly learned a lot more about her from this blog! I do think it would be cool to make history and have the first ever female president but do you think that Palin can overcome all of the bad publicity in the past and be seen as a positive potential candidate? I also didn't know that she has resigned from two different government positions, do you think this will hurt her as well?
ReplyDeleteI think that she has been able to overcome some of her bad publicity, but I don't think it will hurt her because as a candidate you cannot focus on just bad publicity. I think she will make a good comeback! Im not sure about how her resigning will affect her, i know it will be questioned but I'm not sure if that will have a big impact on her campaign
